I also felt that the revenge against the dog killer was a bit odd, until I recalled that the vigilantes are children, one of whom had capabilities outstripping their collective common sense. It's peculiar, but not entirely unbelievable. Overall, the book definitely grabbed me. Carey's prose is comfortable and enjoyable and I found myself turning the page compulsively, to the extent that I read the entire book in a single sitting.
