Since I seem to be on a somewhat feminist angle today, I’d like to point out a recent commercial for the Sprint Instinct and how it formulates negative gender stereotypes.
Please watch first, perhaps form your own opinion, and then read on:
I saw this for the first time in a movie theater as part of the “previews”. The following is a rough transcript with my blow by blow commentary. My voices are much more entertaining in person but I suppose this will have to do.
Couple escaping with (very nice) Audi from high security compound of some sort
Woman: “Find Airport” (plug for the voice GPS) then, “Oh! I just bought a new handbag online!” and shoves phone in man’s face while driving, all during high speed chase.
Omigod! Purses! I love purses! Even more so, I love to be annoying and shove things in my man’s face while he’s driving! In fact, I can’t be trusted to drive! You know what they say about women drivers–
Cut Scene
Woman sensually getting out of luxury hotel swimming pool
I’m so gorgeous that a whole section of this commercial is devoted to me getting out of a pool! Even though I must be a damn good villain, that takes a backseat to my good looks and breathtaking sensuality!!
Man watching news of their getaway on phone sees that aforementioned handbag is “being sent to an undisclosed location”
He must be the brains of the operation since he’s monitoring the news while she just lounges in the pool..
Man: “Honey, where did you send that bag?”
Stern man voice
Woman: “Here”
Shit!! If only she wasn’t so stupid the hotel wouldn’t be surrounded by SWAT teams this very instant!! Women are so useless and ruin all the best laid plans!!
Cut to picture of phone with police sirens in background
